A Prototype for Brazilian Bankcheck Recognition

Abstract: This paper describes a prototype for Brazilian bankcheck recognition. The description is divided into three topics: bankcheck information extraction, digit amount recognition and signature verification. In bankcheck information extraction, our algorithms provide signature and digit amount images free of background patterns and bankcheck printed information. In digit amount recognition, we dealt with the digit amount segmentation and implementation of a complete numeral character recognition system involving im… Show more

“…Offline signature verification applications mainly concern the authentication of bank checks, contracts, ID personal cards, administrative forms, formal agreements, acknowledgement of services received, etc. [60], [171], [236], [259]. This type of verification is related to paper-based document authentication.…”

“…In fact, bank check images are very complex because they generally contain a color pictorial background, several logos, and many preprinted guidelines. Thus, the treatment of signature images extracted from the bank check is very difficult and the development of signature verification systems with the accuracy required of banks and other financial institutions is an area of continued research [39], [59], [60], [61], [171], [236], [367]. For this purpose, specific hybrid systems have been developed, which combine online and offline information for handwritten signature verification.…”

“…There are different strategies for cleaning of background and foreground. Some approaches use separated processing [5,18,6,2] while others use combined cleaning operators for foreand background [20,17].…”

“…It is understood that fixed parameter sets for the processing are not useful, either. In addition, even the number of different image operations should be extendable, because there are many approaches promising good processing results [6,17,18,3,28,27].…”

“…Many systems are already available, however they usually work on welldefined application environments, such as ZIP code recognition [1,7,9] and bankcheck processing [3,4,8], where a number of constraints can be imposed to facilitate the recognition task such as the restricted size of the vocabulary or the reduced number of classes [5,6,10]. Most of the research effort on handwriting recognition has primarily been in improving recognition accuracy of such systems.…”
