A quantitative hydrogeomorphic approach to the classification of temporary wetlands in the Doñana National Park (SW Spain)

Abstract: A quantitative hydrogeomorphic approach was applied to an extensive survey of temporary wetlands in the Doñana National Park (SW Spain) in search for quantitative thresholds for wetland classification. Twenty freshwater ponds on the aeolian sand mantle and 46 sites on silty-clay substrate, located in the southern marshland, were surveyed during the heaviest rainy period so far recorded (October 1995-September 1997. On average, temporary ponds showed higher water depth, longer flooding period, lower conductivi… Show more

“…Compared with a previous study in the same study area, dissolved inorganic phosphate concentrations are generally higher than those reported in these ponds during previous extensive flooding periods, while inorganic nitrogen concentrations were in the same range (Espinar and Serrano 2009). The application of a literature-based ionic ratio (Na ?…”

“…There are also two large semi-permanent ponds which only occasionally dry in years of severe drought, and some natural ponds have been artificially deepened to supply water for cattle and wild mammals, making them permanent in most years. A detailed description of the environmental characteristic of these ponds is given in Gómez-Rodríguez et al (2009), Espinar and Serrano (2009) and Díaz-Paniagua et al (2010.…”

“…4. Ranges of several limnological variables in the Merja Sidi Boughaba during our seasonal study (2009) and in previous seasonal studies (1997)(1998)(1999), as well as in ponds and marshes of the Doñana National Park throughout the spring of 1996, 1997 and 1998, and the autumn of 1997, 1998 and 1999.
