A Radio Frequency Sensor For Measurement Of Small Dielectric Property Changes

Abstract: We propose a sensitive radio frequency (RF) sensor for the measurement of small dielectric property changes. Interference is used to cancel parasitic background signals to improve sensitivity. The device consists of two Wilkinson power dividers, a 180 degree reversephase and an in-phase CPW (coplanar waveguide)-slotline back-toback balun. The small dielectric property changes between de-ionize water and two sets of primary alcohol-water mixtures with different concentrations in terms of molar fractions are mea… Show more

“…Dielectric spectroscopy that measures dielectric properties operates in real-time, is on-line 24 h a day, is label-free, is easy to integrate with other microwave circuit, and yields high-volume production [ 9 ]. Therefore, there are different methods of the complex permittivity determination of dielectric materials, including transmission-only, reflection-only, transmission-reflection, and resonant cavity methods [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ].…”

“…Based on coplanar waveguide structure, an ultra-sensitive radio frequency sensor was proposed to measure yeast cells in [10]. And after further improvement, the transmission coefficient S 21 reached -70 dB by calibration with deionized water in [11]. Then this sensor was used to measure the molarity of primary alcohol and the lowest limit is 0.25%.…”

“…Currently, the industry uses offline characterization methods, such as drying, selective chemical or routine methods, and so forth which are not suitable for a 24/7 running industry. 5 RF/microwave sensors used to measure dielectric properties of the materials 6 have features of real-time operability, label-free technology, and easy to integrate with other microwave circuits, and yields a valuable information that can be monitored using ADC converter and LCD. There are different techniques used to determine the dielectric properties of materials, such as parallel plates, 7,8 coaxial probes, [9][10][11][12][13] transmission lines, [14][15][16][17][18][19] and resonant cavities.…”
