Abstract: Background: The most frequent cause of severe abdominal discomfort is acute appendicitis. Prophylactic antibiotics should be used as directed to reduce the risk of postoperative surgical site infections (SSIs). There is no denitive recommendation, though, for how long to use antibiotics.
