A randomized trial of brief dialectical behaviour therapy skills training in suicidal patients suffering from borderline disorder

“…Specific research on the impact of group skills training has been requested, since it is frequently implemented without combined individual therapy (Gunderson & Links, 2008;Pasieczny & Connor, 2011). Nonetheless, its beneficial outcomes have been shown in several studies in modified DBT settings (Linehan et al, 2015;McMain, Guimond, Barnhart, Habinski, & Streiner, 2017;Soler et al, 2009).…”

“…The strongest evidence favours DBT and psychodynamic approaches, but a major limitation is long duration and complexity. For example, the standard model of DBT is rarely completed in a real-life clinical setting [11]. Several dismantled versions of DBT approaches, such as DBT individual therapy without DBT skills training or DBT skills training without skills coaching, have also obtained good clinical results in BPD treatment [22, 52].…”

“…An important risk factor for suicide is self-injury behaviour [9], which is considered as an intentional, self-directional act to harm oneself [10]. It is estimated that around 50% of suicidal adolescents have had previous self-injury behaviour [11]. One of the reasons adolescents show affinity to self-injury seems to be their lack of ability to regulate emotions [12, 13].…”

“…The standard model of DBT for borderline personality disorder is a 12-month, multimodal treatment, including individual sessions, skill groups, phone coaching and a therapist consultation team. As noted by McMain et al [7], access to standard DBT is restricted due to limited resources and a shortage of well-trained therapists. Thus, they decided to test the effectiveness of a brief course of DBT skills training designed as an adjunctive intervention for high-risk suicidal patients with borderline personality disorder.…”
