A Rare Case of a Renal Cell Carcinoma Confined to the Isthmus of a Horseshoe Kidney

Abstract: Horseshoe kidney (HSK) is the most common renal anomaly. Reports of the incidence of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in HSK are conflicting. Very few cases of isthmus-located RCC have been reported in the literature. We report a unique case of an isthmus-located RCC. Proper vascular and tumor imaging prior to surgery is key to successful tumor removal.

“…3,9 Of all the published cases, only two were found with bilateral malignancies, and fewer than 10 reported cases involving the isthmus. 10 The most common types of renal cell carcinoma are clear cell, papillary, chromophobe, oncocytoma, and collecting duct. Clear cell carcinoma arises from the epithelial cells that line the proximal convoluted tubules of the nephron within the collecting system.…”

“…Developmental disorders of other parts of the urogenital tract as well as other organ systems may be associated with the appearance of the horseshoe kidney. Kidneys are most often connected at the lower poles by fibrous or parenchymal isthmus, which can have its own blood vessels [2]. Treatment involves surgical treatment that includes heminephrectomy or partial nephrectomy with different approaches.…”
