A Rare Case of MRSA Pericarditis with Expanding, Purulent Pericardial Effusion Leading to Uremic Kidney Failure from a Right, Necrotic Toe

Abstract: Purulent pericarditis is an extremely rare entity with only a few reported cases so far. This condition deserves prompt diagnosis because of its significant mortality rate if left untreated. A 76-year-old man with a past medical history of coronary artery disease (CAD) with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) to the left anterior descending artery (LAD) and right circumflex artery (RCA), ischemic cardiomyopathy with moderately reduced ejection fraction (EF 45-50%), peripheral artery disease (PAD), COVID-1… Show more

“…Limited studies have analysed the complex and synergistic effect of COVID-19 and ESRD on pericardial effusion. Research conducted by Rathore et al and Brilliant et al highlighted the presentation and management of pericardial effusion in a patient diagnosed with ESRD and COVID-19 [ 9 , 10 ]. Arcobacter spp.…”

“…Arcobacter spp. was isolated in the pericardial fluid in the case report by Rathore et al whereas MRSA grew in the pericardial fluid in the case report by Brilliant et al [ 9 , 10 ]. However, there has not been a study that has highlighted the presentation and management of pericardial effusion with cardiac tamponade physiology in a young patient diagnosed with ESRD and COVID-19 whose pericardial fluid was negative for any growth.…”
