A rare case of primary solitary endobronchial plasmacytoma

Abstract: Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is a rare plasma cell tumor involving the organs but without bone marrow involvement or the characteristics of multiple myeloma. Primary solitary endobronchial plasmacytoma is extremely rare. Here we present the case of an 86‐year‐old male ex‐smoker who visited our outpatient clinic for an endobronchial mass in the left upper lobe of the lung. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy revealed a protruding mass in the left upper lobar bronchus; based on the bronchoscopic biopsy findings, a prim… Show more

“…Only a few cases of MSP have been documented in the literature [3][4][5][6]. Primary endobronchial plasmacytoma is an extremely rare condition of extramedullary plasmacytoma [7]. Here, we reported a case of MSP that first presented with an endobronchial mass.…”

“…EMP manifesting as a soft tissue mass in more than one location is very uncommon. The most frequent location of EMP is the upper respiratory tract, including the nasal cavity and sinuses, nasopharynx, and larynx [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. Solitary endobronchial plasmacytoma is the extremely rare manifestation of EMP, described in only a few reports [7].…”

“… 5 Although there are cases described in the thorax, the number of EMP found in the low tract (including trachea, bronchi and lungs) and mediastinum is limited. 6 , 7 , 8 Therefore, the diagnosis may be delayed due to absence of clinical suspicion.…”

“… 10 However, after treatment of EMP, up to 20–30% of cases can develop local recurrence. 3 , 7 Some studies claim that head and neck plasmacytomas have a better prognosis, perhaps due to their good response to RT; however, others do not consider the location as a relevant factor, observing a similar evolution. Nevertheless, metastatic lymph node involvement and monoclonal component is clearly related with worse prognosis and a more aggressive treatment is recommended.…”
