A rare pulmonary infection caused by Arthrographis kalrae

Abstract: Arthrographis kalrae is a rare isolate in clinical specimens. Only ten cases of infection with this species have been described so far. To our knowledge, we report the first case of a pulmonary infection caused by A. kalrae in a patient with a past history of stage IIA Hodgkin's lymphoma and demonstrate that this organism can act as an opportunistic human pathogen.

“…Arthrographis is a hyaline mould that has been reported as a cause of pneumonia in a patient with lymphoma, 33 but to our knowledge it has not been reported as a cause of an IFI in a HSCT recipient. Our patient had multiple nodular lung opacities surrounded by halos of ground-glass opacities on CT and his BAL grew only Arthrographis sp.…”

“…It is rarely reported as a cause of mycetoma, septic arthritis, sinusitis, meningitis, pneumonia, bronchopleural fistula, and onychomycosis. [99][100][101][102] There are two case reports of A. kalrae infection in patients with CF, causing pneumonia and fungemia, respectively. 103,104 The radiographic appearance of A. kalrae may resemble that of Aspergillus species.…”
