A recipe for creating ideal hybrid memristive-CMOS neuromorphic processing systems

Abstract: The development of memristive device technologies has reached a level of maturity to enable the design of complex and large-scale hybrid memristive-CMOS neural processing systems. These systems offer promising solutions for implementing novel in-memory computing architectures for machine learning and data analysis problems. We argue that they are also ideal building blocks for the integration in neuromorphic electronic circuits suitable for ultra-low power brain-inspired sensory processing systems, therefore l… Show more

“…The scientific truth about the existence of a finite interaction speed, in general, was recently confirmed by providing experimental evidence for the existence of gravitational waves. 6 The experimental evidence also indirectly underpins that the mathematical background of the Minkowski transform is well-established and correctly describes nature, where the speed of interaction is limited. Modern treatments of special relativity base it on the single postulate of Minkowski spacetime [7].…”

“…We could also find two other memristive designs in literature for biomedical applications (shown in Table III), but they are only simulations considering memristive crossbars. This sparsity is despite the significant advantages that memristors provide in MAC parallelization and in-memory computing paradigm, while being compatible with CMOS technology [151]. These features make memristors ideal candidates for DL accelerators in general, and for portable and edge-based healthcare applications in particular, because they have stringent device size and power consumption requirements.…”

“…The case is similar to other components in the computing chain, too. In addition to using shorter operands, another plausible assumption is that if we use quick analog signal processing to replace the slow digital calculation, as proposed in [23,24], the system gets proportionally quicker. As the temporal behavior explains, a system comprising memristors will be only marginally quicker, until the time of data transfer can be significantly reduced.…”
