A Regional, Early Spring Bloom of Phaeocystis pouchetii on the New England Continental Shelf

Abstract: The genus Phaeocystis is distributed globally throughout the world's oceans, forming blooms in European, Asian, Antarctic, Arctic, and North American waters and in tropical, polar and temperate systems. It often (but not always) releases dimethylsulfide into the surface layer, which has the potential for altering weather and climate patterns (Charlson et al., 1987; Stefels et al., 1995), and significantly influences the biogeochemistry of sulfur (Wang et al., 2016). In addition, Phaeocystis is considered to be… Show more

“…The VPR was towed at 10 knots (5.1 m s −1 ), undulating between 5 and up to 100 m with a vertical velocity of approximately 1 m s −1 . Net community production (NCP) integrated over the mixed layer was calculated for the VPR transect from O 2 /Ar measured continuously (seconds‐to‐minutes) by an Equilibrator Inlet Mass Spectrometer (EIMS) from the ship's underway system (intake depth = 2.1 m; Smith et al., 2021). We present data from VPR Tow 1 on 18 April 2018, near the beginning of the cruise.…”

“…Photoinhibition effects were included using the relationship determined by Behrenfeld and Falkowski (1997b). Daily productivity was derived by integrating the rates through the 1% isolume depth (Oliver et al, 2021;Smith et al, 2021). All variables of both models are listed in Table 1.…”
