A remote sensing and GIS based application for monitoring water levels at Kariba dam.

Abstract: The Global warming effect has had negative impacts on water resources in Zimbabwe due to erratic rainfall patterns. The overall effect leads to reduction in power generation on hydropower stations as a result of low water levels. Water level monitoring at hydro power generation reservoirs is thus of utmost importance. Currently employed in situ based water level monitoring techniques are less efficient and do not provide the synoptic coverage of the lake. We present the relationship between factors (natural an… Show more

“…Long-term trend analysis at Pakistan's Tarbela Dam has utilized InSAR to assess the effects of reservoir water level changes and ground movements on dam integrity, informing maintenance and risk mitigation strategies [11]. The Kariba Dam plays a crucial part in hydropower and water resource management in Africa, which is supported by InSAR monitoring [12] and helps to detect ground deformation. These case studies highlighted InSAR's adaptability, precision, and significance in monitoring dam stability to provide early warnings.…”

“…The main criteria for the development of MHP in an area are hydrological characteristics with water flow and head that match the electrical energy requirements and have geological natures that support the Int J Elec & Comp Eng ISSN: 2088-8708  development of MHP components with an environmental carrying capacity that is free from floods and landslides [8], [9]. The geological profile can be obtained by taking measurements in the field.…”
