A Report of Testing at Archaeological Sites 41FY421, 41FY422, 41FY424 in Fayette County, Texas

Abstract

S i t e s 41FY421, 41FY422, and 41FY424 a r e upland a b o r i g i n a l s i t e s s i t u a t e d on d i v i d e s s e p a r a t i n g Robinson, Cedar, and Bartons Creeks i n northwest F a y e t t e County. These s i t e s a r e c h a r a c t e r i z e d by g e n e r a l l y shallow, uns t r a t i f i e d sandy d e p o s i t s . The c u l t u r a l i n v e n t o r y i s l i m i t e d t o s t o n e m a t e r i a l s --p r i m a r i l y thermally a l t e r e d c h e r t and q u a r t z i t e and l i t h i c d e b i t a g e . D i a g n o s t i c c u l t u r a l i n d i c a t o r s a r e r e l a t i v e l y s c a r c e , w i t h a l a r g e m a j o r i t y of t h e s e being l e s s than 2000 y e a r s i n age. One s i t e , 41FY422, produced 25 h e a r t h s and r e l a t e d f e a t u r e s . Most of t h e s e a r e a p p a r e n t l y l e s s than 2000 t o 3000 y e a r s i n age a s w e l l .
