A Research Agenda for Systems of Systems Architecting

Abstract: This paper, documents the activity of a workshop on defining a research agenda for Systems of Systems SoS; Architecting, which was held at USC in October 2006. After two days of invited talks on critical success factors for SoS engineering, the authors of this paper convened for one day to brainstorm topics for the purpose of shaping the near-term research agenda of the newly convened USC Center for Systems and Software Engineering (CSSE). The output from the workshop is a list of ten high-impact items with co… Show more

“…When the view is thus widened, it becomes clear that the larger parts can also be described as resilient (or not). -of-systems [Resilience Alliance, 2007] [Axelband and Valerdi, 2007], exhibit resilience by continuing to collaborate and presumably by continuing to evolve. Ecosystems (e.g.…”

[Axelband and Valerdi, 2007] The attribute of a system of systems that makes it less likely to experience failure, and more likely to recover from failure. [Woods, 2006] Resilience is how well a system recognizes and adapts to handle unanticipated perturbations (those perturbations that are outside the design envelope) [Westrum, 2006] Resilience is 3 things: 1.…”

“…It abstracts from the scope of engineered systems, like small vertical dynaSoS or large dynaSoS. Papers specifically focusing on architectures are presented in [81][82][83][84][85][86][87]. Our focus is broader, as we consider research fields related to properties of dynaSoS.…”

“…Por outro lado, a engenharia de SoS enfrenta desafios importantes devido às suas características e complexidades inerentes [Axelband et al 2007]. O principal problema é que a Engenharia de Sistemas Baseada em Modelos utiliza como referência ADLs tradicionais (UML e SysML) concebidas para descrever a arquitetura de sistemas de software isolados (não múltiplos).…”
