A Resource-Based View and Institutional Theory- based analysis of Industry 4.0 Implementation in the Indian Engineering Industry

Abstract: Industry 4.0 is the digital transformation of the organization to meet the organizational goals and objectives. Industry 4.0 is making slow inroads in the Indian Engineering Industry. Therefore, there is a need for a study to understand the dynamics of the implementation in Indian Engineering Industry from a theoretical point of view. This study uses the Institutional Theory and ResourceBased theory to analyse the implementation of Industry 4.0. "Coercive", "normative" and "mimetic" pressure is used to analyse… Show more

“…It fundamentally changes the way an organization carries out day to day business (Schwertner, 2017). It could be viewed as the usage of digital technologies to transform different functional departments and associated systems and processes within these functions of organizations such as production, purchasing, marketing, accounting, HR and finance (Sony and Aithal, 2020b). The three phases of the digital transformation of the organization are digitization, digitalization and digital transformation (Verhoef et al , 2021).…”

“…In addition, with supply chain level improvements: better, faster, cheaper as the integration of enabling technologies matures. Therefore, it is a time-consuming process that enables organizations to learn over time (Liao et al , 2017; Sony and Aithal, 2020). For example, organizations may learn about complementary practices, which may help in the implementation of Industry 4.0.…”

“…The late adopters of Industry 4.0 will have to position themselves externally in the marketplace using Early and late adopters of Industry 4.0 innovative Industry 4.0 business models (Ludbrook et al, 2019), otherwise it will be difficult to enter the market dominated by early adopters. From a resource-based theory perspective (Barney, 1991), the early adopters will over time build organizational internal resources and competencies (Sony and Aithal, 2020), which would be difficult for rivals to emulate. Hence such organizations will have unique resources and capabilities which will result in competitive advantage in terms of unique horizontal, vertical, and end-to-end integration through Industry 4.0 technologies.…”

“…The theory focuses on performance differences across firms. Performance differences are viewed as earnings differentials attributable to resources having different levels of efficiency (Sony & Aithal, 2020). Superior resources enable an organization to produce better products and satisfy customers more sufficiently than it would with inferior resources.…”

“…Efficiency is measured in terms of net benefits, or the benefits to an organization that are left after the firm's costs are subtracted. Sustainable competitive advantages and disadvantages can occur immediately, such as through a purchase, or can develop over a period of time (Sony & Aithal, 2020). Resource-based theory did not initially focus on whether resources were static or changing.…”
