A revealed preference study of management journals’ direct influences

Abstract: Our study develops and uses a new methodology for analyzing journal citations to recent publications to determine which management journals now have the greatest influence on the field of management. It analyzes the 23637 academic journal references cited in the 1275 articles published in 17 key management journals during 1993 and 1994, focusing on citations to references published up to the modal vintage of 4 years earlier. Most cited as a percentage of all these references was Strategic Management Journal (1… Show more

“…Literature reviews may serve several functions. They may contribute, for instance, to assess the influence of different journals (Baumgartner & Pieters, 2003;Tahai & Meyer, 1999) to consider scientific impact (Ingwersen, 2000;van Dalen & Henkens, 2001), to obtain an overall view of the intellectual structure of a field (Dobers, Strannegard, & Wolff, 2000;Hill & Carley, 1999;Locke & Perera, 2001), or to suggest how a field might move forward (Eisenhardt, 1989;Morrison & Bies, 1991). In our study, we partly follow Hill and Carley (1999) who described the structure and evolution of attention to organizational culture as the development of a community of scholars.…”

“…Bibliometric analysis investigates these structural patterns and thus reveals interrelationships between ideas, authors and "the intellectual structure of scholarly fields" (White 1990). Based on the underlying assumption that closely related works are frequently cited together by referencing papers, bibliometric analysis is a valuable tool for the analysis of scientific discourses (Culnan 1986;Hoffman and Holbrook 1993;Tahai and Meyer 1999). In broader terms (e.g., Lievrow 1990), bibliometrics is defined as the application of mathematical and statistical methods to books and any other media of communication.…”

“…The study of references, publications and citations is important in tracing the intellectual growth of a certain application or method. The most intuitive indicator is the number of published papers from one author (Tahai and Meyer 1999). Another level of analysis makes use of data pertaining the frequency with which various authors are cited in the literature (McKain 1990).…”

“…Initially, we adapt the range of citation metrics discussed in Linderman and Chandrasekaran (2010), Lockett and McWilliams (2005) and Tahai and Meyer (1999). Primarily, we keep the focus of citation metrics on capturing the extent OR/MS/OM is establishing a foothold in Finance.…”
