A review of free-piston engine history and applications

Abstract: This document reviews the history of free-piston internal combustion engines, from the air compressors and gas generators used in the mid-20th century through to recent free-piston hydraulic engines and linear electric generators. Unique features of the free-piston engine are presented and their effects on engine operation are discussed, along with potential advantages and disadvantages compared to conventional engines. The paper focuses mainly on developed engines where operational data has been reported. Fin… Show more

“…Fig. 1 shows that efforts of a century by the researchers to save the energy or use new types of energy systems in vehicle manufacturing to achieve a more sustainable society (Mikalsen and Roskilly 2007, Colares 2008, Deal III 2010, Høyer 2008, Andújar and Segura 2009. However, these new technologies have been applied to agroforestry machinery behind of automobiles.…”

“…Wang proposes an active suspension system, which is suitable for both conventional and novel electric vehicles [3,4]. Moreover, linear motor is also applied in free piston engine [5]. Above all, improving output performance of linear motors depends on both structure design optimization and on output evaluation system.…”

“…The Hydraulic Free Piston Engine (HFPE) has similar function as engine-pump system and higher efficiency. But HFPE is far from practical application for some technical bottlenecks [2][3][4]. So the structural principle of Hydraulic Confined Piston Engine (HCPE) was put forward, which integrates nearly all the merits of engine-pump system and HFPE.…”
