A Review of Optoelectronic Oscillators for High Speed Signal Processing Applications

Abstract: The Optoelectronic Oscillator (OEO) was first demonstrated in 1996 as a low phase noise RF source. Low phase noise RF sources have uses for multiple applications, ranging from analog to digital converters to radar to metrology. In the past sixteen years, the OEO has been shown to be useful for other signal processing applications. This paper will provide a background of the OEO's principles of operation, as well as multiple examples of signal processing applications where the OEO can be used. The OEO can be ap… Show more

“…The y-polarization light is sent to a broadband light source (BLS) on the basis of the MZM-optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) [9]. The MZM is driven by 15 GHz and 25 GHz RF signals, which produce multiple optical sidebands with 30 GHz and 50 GHz channel spacings (insert (f)) [10].…”

“…Therefore, the phase noise performance of OEO is theoretically independent of the oscillation frequency [18]. After nearly two decades of continuous exploration, the research on optoelectronic oscillators has made rapid progress [21]. However, it is still necessary to improve the performance and stability of OEOs for wider application.…”

“…However, it inevitably brings some knotty problems including rock-ribbed spurs and inferior frequency instability at the same time. For After nearly two decades of continuous exploration, the research on optoelectronic oscillators has made rapid progress [21]. However, it is still necessary to improve the performance and stability of OEOs for wider application.…”

“…The phase noise is determined as a single value measured at a frequency offset from the carrier [16], and it is notoriously independent of the oscillation frequency.…”
