A review on adsorbents used for defluoridation of drinking water

Abstract: Drinking water has been contaminated over decades with some very detrimental compounds such as fluoride. Exposure to fluoride through drinking water above the permissible limit (1.0-1.5 mg/L) causes severe dental and skeletal fluorosis. Adsorption technique which deals with adsorbents for fluoride removal from an aqueous solution is a highly efficient and selective process. This review paper provides insights on adsorbents used and developed by researchers for defluoridation of drinking water. It includes vari… Show more

“…49,50 It is necessary to take into consideration that hydroxyapatite, a calcium apatite mineral that is one of the components of vertebrate tissues such as scales, has been proven to possess very high ion removal ability, 51 and also has been highlighted as an effective adsorbent in comparison with other adsorbents, such as calcite. 52 Calcite has been used extensively as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions because the surface Ca(II) is easily subject to ion exchange and has an effect upon the adsorption properties of heavy metal ions. 53 In a study by Liaw et al 54 an eco-friendly and low-cost hydroxyapatite was extracted from Tilapia fish scales and used as the raw material to synthesize composite scaffolds.…”

“…The kinetics of any sorption process is a function of different parameters, such as the structural properties of adsorbent, nature and concentration of adsorbate and adsorbent-adsorbate interactions [54,55]. Adsorption kinetic study was carried out with initial fluoride concentration of 1.0 mg L À and adsorbent dose of 0.5 g L À1 at 313 K. Pseudo-first-order and pseudosecond-order adsorption model and intra-particle diffusion model were used to test the kinetic data in order to establish the mechanism of adsorption.…”

“…Malaysia alone generates about 4 million tons of OPA annually. OPA is siliceous in nature and this has drawn the interest of researchers to look for its various potential applications such as cement replacement material, adsorbent for the removal of zinc from aqueous solution, and flue gas desulphurization [4][5][6]. Still, most of the OPA generated ends up in landfill causing environmental problems.…”
