“…According to these findings, the corrosion resistance of the epoxy composite coating has enhanced greatly with aHMS–sMO and sHMS–sMO fillers. This is predominantly due to the presence of well-distributed fillers on the coating matrix, which produced a tortuous and longer diffusion path for corrosive species. , Especially, the sHMS–sMO coating provided the best corrosion resistance, which was due to the hydrophobic properties of the coating, as shown in Table . The comparatively high hydrophobic character of the sHMS–sMO (CA = 96.4°) coating system, compared to that of aHMS–sMO (CA = 94.5°) and aHMS–MO (CA = 75.34°) coating systems, prevented wetting of the coating surface with the aqueous corrosive media and therefore delaying their penetration into the coating layer.…”

“…In addition to thermal shielding, coatings need to have strong barrier performance for long-term protection. Composite coatings are therefore a good choice for enhanced barrier performance by creating a highly tortuous diffusion path for the penetration of the water and other corrodent species . Here, we have demonstrated that by a suitable surface modification of the fillers the coatings can be made hydrophobic.…”
