A review on hydroxy anthraquinones from bacteria: crosstalk’s of structures and biological activities

Abstract: Anthraquinones (AQ), unveiling large structural diversity, among polyketides demonstrate a wide range of applications. The hydroxy anthraquinones (HAQ), a group of anthraquinone derivatives, are secondary metabolites produced by bacteria and eukaryotes. Plant-based HAQ are well-studied unlike bacterial HAQ and applied as herbal medicine for centuries. Bacteria are known to synthesize a wide variety of structurally diversified HAQ through polyketide pathways using polyketide synthases (I, II & III) principally … Show more

“…The presence of a single electronegative atom (OH) in the OMC will show less charge separation which ultimately improves the DMSO solubility of the compound [44] . On top of that, the reduced toxicity profile of OMC [14] compared to chrysophanol might excel in its utility as a therapeutic agent in future clinical studies.…”

“…The copyright holder for this preprint this version posted March 4, 2023. ; https://doi.org/10.1101/2023.03.04.531071 doi: bioRxiv preprint Researchers worldwide evaluated various biologically originated novel compounds as XO inhibitors and noticed that few hydroxyl anthraquinones (HAQ) and their derivatives viz., anthrarobin, anthragallol, aloe-emodin, and chrysophanol have been explored as potent XO inhibitors. Over the above, earlier literature reports explored the potent anti-inflammatory potential of HAQ along with other bio functionalities and observed to be promising with minimal side effects [13][14][15] . Maksimovic et al, 2010 reported that compounds having antioxidant and antiinflammatory potential are also competent to treat gout and associated inflammatory diseases owing to their ability to reduce uric acid & ROS levels [16] .…”

“…Anthraquinones have been used as relevant antibiotics and antitumor agents. , Functionalization of hydroxy anthraquinones with propargyl bromide generates planar, conjugated ligands to form C(sp)–Au bonds, leading to complexes that are luminescent. A key optical advantage in the context of metal complexes is the added emissive property from the anthraquinone chromophore in the visible region.…”

“…Among the natural quinones, anthraquinones are the largest group, with about 700 reported compounds. Most of these molecules have been isolated from plants, lichens, and fungi, although they are also distributed in microorganisms, insects, and animals [ 91 , 92 ]. However, these organisms use different biosynthetic pathways for the production of anthraquinones.…”
