Better insight into non-potable reclaimed water and drinking water can produce more reliable risk assessment and help to achieve sustainable water reuse in the long-term. This study illustrates the effectiveness of fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) for rapid cross-connection detection. Based on samples collected from three different sites of China, it is identified that the overall fluorescence intensity was 6-31 times of reclaimed to drinking water in water samples at all FRI regions. This is shown to be highly sensitive over conventional water quality parameters. Furthermore, based on parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), humic acid and tryptophan are considered as the main components contributing to fluorescence both in secondary and tertiary effluents. Total fluorescence intensities as well as fluorescence peaks of EEM pairs were investigated. Under different mixing scenarios, it is found that the signal is distinguishable as low as 20% of reclaimed water. This study also offers possibility of exploring portable devices with identified fluorescence peaks in EEM regions for risk prevention and water quality monitoring at end user sites.

In scene of worrisome water shortage, municipal wastewater has been gradually accepted as an alternative water resource containing important nutrients for irrigation. Rice cultivation, which is one of the main crops feeding global population and requires plenty of water for its effective growth, has been often irrigated by municipal wastewater in many countries. While irrigation of municipal wastewater for rice cultivation must bring benefits for farmers mainly by increased yield with less amount of fertilizers, it also has potential to cause drawbacks to human health and the environment. This chapter discusses about these aspects based on scientific works and practical experiences of municipal wastewater irrigation for rice production as well as the introduction of our concept to cultivate rice for animal feeding with irrigation of treated wastewater, which can contribute to resource circulation between urban and rural areas. The feasibility study under this concept has demonstrated that the target value of rice yield can be achieved and protein-rich rice preferable for animal feed can be harvested with irrigation of properly treated municipal wastewater.

An extensive systematic literature review was performed to identify and characterize the available methodologies for risk ranking in the fields of feed and food safety and nutritional hazards, as well as the socio-economic field. Risk ranking methods from the environmental field were studied as well to determine whether approaches used in this field could also be applied for ranking human health risks related to feed and food safety and nutritional hazards. The review used a predefined search protocol. It covered the bibliographic databases Scopus, CAB Abstracts, Web of Sciences, and PubMed over the period 1993-2013. All references obtained were stored into an Endnote database and evaluated for their relevance. All references deemed to be relevant were studied in-depth so as to characterize the risk ranking method described. Characteristics of each method were stored in an Excel database. The methods for risk ranking were then grouped into method categories, which were described in general. These groups included: risk assessment, comparative risk assessment, risk ratio method, scoring method, cost of illness, DALY/QALY, willingness to pay, multi criteria decision analysis, risk matrix, flow charts/decision trees and expert judgment methods. Based on the characteristics of the individual methods and the method categories, an overarching framework was developed for selection of the appropriate method(s) that could be used for risk ranking of feed and food related hazards, on the basis of human health impact. This framework has the format of a decision tool, with which -given the characteristics of the risk ranking question at hand -the most appropriate method(s) can be selected.
