A review on multilayer radiation shielding

Abstract: Radiation shielding is a body of material that is placed between a radiation source and an object to be protected with the aim of reducing the intensity of radiation at the object’s location. It can be made from various materials. These materials can be stacked into a multilayer shield or they can be mixed into a composite shield. The main objective of the present study is to review the list of multilayer shield combinations that have been studied and to highlight the findings on material arrangement and conse… Show more

“…We investigate several multilayered shielding designs using multiple alternating photon and neutron shields as a more effective means to attenuate secondary radiation produced in each shielding layer. While multilayered shielding has been studied in the past for a variety of applications, 14 this work investigates the efficacy of multilayered shielding designs with the mixed photon and neutron radiation field characteristic of preclinical and clinical bremsstrahlung-based radiotherapy machines. While multilayered shielding has been applied to fission spectra, 15,16 photoneutron spectra produced in MV radiotherapy system can be at a significantly higher energy.…”

“…A multilayer shield comprises at least two layers of various materials. In this arrangement, the incoming radiation will have more opportunities to be dissipated and absorbed by the shield [104]. Multilayer composite shields are useful for attenuating mixed radiation.…”

“…Due to the current rapid advancement of technology and the necessity for ionizing radiation in many areas, including nuclear power plants, medicine, research facilities, and industry, gamma and X-ray utilization has taken on a high concern. It requires protecting the environment, people, patients, workers, and the public against its risks [ 1 , 2 ]. Lead and concrete are well-known materials for radiation protection, with concrete being one of the most popular materials used in radiation therapy facilities and nuclear reactors to protect against radiation leakage from radioactive sources [ 3 , 4 ].…”
