A review on ozone therapy in periodontitis

Abstract: The biologic process of osseointegration (bone to implant interface), in which the implant forms an intimate relationship with the bone, provides the foundation for modern dental implants. Osseointegration necessitates a varying length of healing time. Despite the high success and survival rates of dental implants, problems do occur, necessitating ongoing periodontal and prosthodontic care. This failure frequently results in "peri-implantitis," which affects the soft and hard tissues surrounding the osseointeg… Show more

“…Ozone has a direct impact on the immune system and cellular metabolic responses, notably by stimulating the proliferation of immune-active cells and enhancing the synthesis of biologically active substances such as interleukins, leukotrienes, and prostaglandins. 39 , 40 Furthermore, its role in promoting hypervascularization and subsequent tissue hyperoxygenation is crucial for effective bone repair.…”

“…Its remarkable nutritional profile, which includes anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic, anti-cancer, and antiarrhythmic qualities, is another noteworthy aspect of it. [16][17][18][19][20] Previously, there have been works on the preparation of hydrogel using natural mucilages from fenugreek and flax seeds, but they have all been prepared in conjunction with an artificial cross-linker or grafted with another inorganic material. This limits the overall environmental-friendly property of using a natural hydrogel and also introduces complexity in preparation.…”

“…For example, in periodontitis and gingival inflammatory disorders, ozone is widely used to reduce microbial biofilms. 9 In this circumstance, ozone exerts its pro-oxidant and anti-bacterial activity. 10 Actually, ozone has primarily a pro-oxidant nature, which only at low doses triggers the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) at a level that makes these reactive compounds signaling molecules, more than damaging agents.…”
