The potential of plant-based natural compounds in the creation of new molluscicidal and antimicrobial medications has gained attention in recent years. The current study compared the metabolic profiles, antibacterial, and molluscicidal properties of the medicinal plants Calotropis procera (C. procera) and Atriplex halimus (A. halimus). In both plants, 118 metabolites were identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Palmitic acid, stigmasterol, and campesterol were the most prevalent constituents. C. procera extract showed stronger antibacterial activity than A. halimus against Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis. Both extracts exhibited molluscicidal activity against Biomphalaria alexandrina, with LC50 values of C. procera (135 mg/L) and A. halimus (223.8 mg/L). Survival rates of snails exposed to sub-lethal concentrations (LC25) of C. procera and A. halimus extracts were 5% and 20%, respectively. The hatchability of snail eggs exposed to both extracts has been dramatically reduced. Both extracts significantly decreased the levels of alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, total protein, and albumin in snails, as well as causing DNA damage and resulting in numerous hermaphrodite and digestive gland damages and distortions. Molecular docking showed palmitic acid binding with acid, alkaline, and alanine aminotransferases in treated digestive gland snails. In conclusion, C. procera and A. halimus have antibacterial and molluscicidal properties.

Snakebite being a quick progressing serious situation needs immediate and aggressive therapy. Snake venom antiserum is the only approved and effective treatment available, but for selected snake species only. The requirement of trained staff for administration and serum reactions make the therapy complicated. In tropical countries where snakebite incidence is high and healthcare facilities are limited, mortality and morbidities associated with snake envenomation are proportionately high. Traditional compilations of medical practitioners’ personal journals have wealth of plant-based snake venom antidotes. Relatively, very few plants or their extractives have been scientifically investigated for neutralization of snake venom or its components. None of these investigations presents enough evidence to initiate clinical testing of the agents. This review focuses on curating Indian traditional snake envenomation therapies, identifying plants involved and finding relevant evidence across modern literature to neutralize snake venom components. Traditional formulations, their method of preparation and dosing have been discussed along with the investigational approach in modern research and their possible outcomes. A safe and easily administrable small molecule of plant origin that would protect or limit the spread of venom and provide valuable time for the victim to reach the healthcare centre would be a great lifesaver.

Emulsions are a class of high-surface-energy materials typically stabilized by surfactants, polymers, particles, or a combination of these. There has been considerable effort to develop new emulsifiers by exploiting developments in synthetic chemistry; however, synthetic surface-active species may assist in the stabilization of a specific type of immiscible liquid–liquid systems. That is, one stabilizer does not provide a solution for all interface stabilization problems. Moreover, the synthesis of surface-active systems involves high production costs and complex synthesis routes and generates a substantial amount of chemical waste. In this work, we show that plant latex, an aqueous dispersion of colloidal-scale particles in which small as well as large bioactive species are also present, can be used as a versatile and sustainable source for interface stabilization. The constituents of the latex are found to reduce the oil–water interfacial tension due to the spontaneous adsorption of surface-active species present in the latex. The surface-active nature of latex is further exploited to obtain very stable single emulsions, double emulsions (DEs), and multiple emulsions (MEs). Our results conclusively show that plan latex is a potential versatile source for the stabilization of emulsions created by considering different types of immiscible liquid systems.
