A Review on the Applications of Ozonation for the Treatment of Real Agro-Industrial Wastewaters

Abstract: Regarding agro-wastewaters, the strong loads in biorefractory substances and seasonality reduce the efficiency of biological treatments and ozonation can play an important role, so that this article reviews its application for such streams. Indeed, biodegradability and toxicity removal was assessed for a wide range of agro-effluents such as olive mill, wineries and distilleries, pulp and paper, cork and cheese production. Solid catalysts reveal promising potential, even though literature is still scarce report… Show more

“…Nowadays, much attention is given to the treatment of agro-industrial wastewaters due to their growing pollution potential arising out of the fast industrialization and multiple anthropogenic activities. Uncontrolled discharge of wastewaters into the environment will pose detrimental effects to humans, animals, and plants [1][2][3].…”

“…However, several other agro-industries such as fruit processing, coffee, dairy, palm oil and pulp mill industries, are also arising as important agricultural activities in different countries, thus requiring to be addressed. These activities are the biggest water consumers among the industrial sector which is reflected in the emergence of a significantly environmental problem related to wastewater generated along different production steps [1]. The wastewaters are characterized by their large pollutant load which represents a real issue to the surrounding environment when discharged without proper treatment.…”

“…In this ambit, advanced oxidation processes are promising technologies to reduce the environmental impact of these effluents [5,10] and to promote water recovery from effluents [11,12]. Among them, ozonation [13] and Fenton´s process [14] show interesting potential for the treatment of OMW.…”

“…The traditional biological treatment systems present unsatisfactory results when applied to the degradation of effluents that have a high amount of bio refractory compounds (such as effluents from agri-food industries) and the development of chemical oxidation strategies becomes necessary (Martins and Quinta-Ferreira, 2014).…”
