A review on the role of PTENP1 in human disorders with an especial focus on tumor suppressor role of this lncRNA

Abstract: PTENP1 is a long non-coding RNA which has been regarded as a pseudogene of the PTEN tumor suppressor gene. However, it has been shown to be a biologically active transcript that can function as a competing endogenous RNA and enhance expression of PTEN protein. This lncRNA has two transcripts, namely PTENP1-202 and PTENP1-202 with sizes of 3996 and 1215 bps, respectively. PTENP1 acts as a sponge for some PETN-targeting miRNAs, such as miR-17, miR-20a, miR-19b, miR-106b, miR-200c, miR-193a-3p, miR-499-5p and miR… Show more

“…PTENP1, the pseudogene of PTEN, is a novel modulator of PTEN expression [140]. The relative expression of PTEN and PTENP1 change according to the variable stages and histological grades of different tumors [141][142][143]. Prostate cancer associated transcript-1(PCAT-1) is an oncogenic lncRNA, high expression of PCAT-1 is associated with poor overall survival of cancer.…”

“…Disruption of the PTEN-miRNA-PTENP1 axis and ceRNA networks in carcinogenic progression is contemporary and is an exciting area in the discovery of regulatory mechanisms that are altered in cancer. In addition to its regulation of PTEN expression, PTENP1 is able to act as a tumour suppressor independent of its PTEN regulatory function as described in a recent review of the role of PTENP1 in human disorders with a focus on its tumour suppressor functionality [20].…”

“…Through interactions with DNA, RNA, and protein molecules, lncRNAs contribute to intricate regulatory networks that are involved in a wide range of cellular processes and pathological functions [8][9][10][11]. Recent evidence continues to accumulate, shedding light on the pivotal roles of lncRNAs as either oncogenes or tumor suppressors, underscoring their potential as therapeutic targets in various disorders, with a particular emphasis on cancer [12][13][14][15][16][17][18].…”
