A Revisit of Global Dimming and Brightening Based on the Sunshine Duration

Abstract: Observations show that the surface incident solar radiation (R s ) decreased over land from the 1950s to the 1980s and increased thereafter, known as global dimming and brightening. This claim has been questioned due to the inhomogeneity and low spatial-temporal coverage of R s observations. Based on direct comparisons of~200 observed and sunshine duration (SunDu) derived R s station pairs, meeting data record lengths exceeding 60 months and spatial distances less than 110 km, we show that meteorological obser… Show more

“…Calculated shortwave radiation showed good accuracy when compared with shortwave radiation observation. Due to longer availability, the derived shortwave solar radiation revealed a dimming before the 1980s and a brightening afterward [69,70,73]. The sunshine duration derived shortwave radiation agreed well with satellite retrievals, reanalysis, and climate model [69].…”

“…In Lake Chaohu, air temperature increased by 0.46 • C/decade since 1980, at the rate twice of the global average (0.25 • C/decade) [100], and the wind speed decreased by 0.29m/s/decade, consistent with the atmospheric still phenomenon around the world [102]. Solar radiation decreased, under the background of a decrease in China (1.06 W/m 2 /decade) [70], contrary to the global brightening, especially in Europa [101]. Previous studies had discussed that higher air temperatures significantly contributed to recent warming of lakes [103,104].…”

“…The equations of R dir and R dif are regressed based on the observed direct and diffuse solar radiation from 16 CMA stations during the period 1994–2014. Analogously, the calculation formula for the monthly derived R dir data set is improved based on that for the derived R s data set (He et al, ; Tang et al, ; Yang et al, ), as shown in equation : Rdir/Rc_italicdir=a0+a1×)(n/N+a2×n/N2 Rc_italicdir=τc_italicdir×I00.25emitalicdt …”

“…Moreover, the solar radiation measurements over China suffer from problems such as sensitivity drift and instrument replacement (Wang, ; Wang et al, ; Yang et al, ; Zhang & Lu, , ). Sunshine duration (SunDu) records have been suggested that can be used to reconstruct long‐term R s with comparatively large spatial coverage (He et al, ; Matuszko, ; Sanchez‐Lorenzo et al, ; Wang et al, b; Yang et al, ). Satellite‐derived R s products also provide an estimate of R s (Feng & Wang, ; Li et al, ; Ma et al, ).…”
