A Robust and High Self‐Healing Efficiency Poly(Urea‐Urethane) Based on Disulfide Bonds with Cost‐Effective Strategy

Abstract: The development of self‐healing poly(urea‐urethane)s with remarkable mechanical properties as well as self‐healing capability is an important challenge through a low‐cost approach. In this study, cystine dimethyl ester (CDE) is synthesized cost‐effectively using cystine from bio‐based sources as raw material, and a novel self‐healing poly(urea‐urethane) is successfully prepared using synthesized CDE as a disulfide‐containing chain extender through a two‐step approach. The as‐prepared disulfide‐containing poly(… Show more

“…To confirm their molecular structure, attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) studies were conducted (Figures S4 and S5). The absorption peaks of the S–S bond and C–S bond observed in the Raman spectra (Figure S6) indicated the successful insertion of disulfide bonds on the polymer chain. , To demonstrate the impact of disulfide bonds on the crystallization of PCL segments, we synthesized PUU-EDA using nondisulfide bonds-containing ethylenediamine (EDA) as a chain extender (the corresponding FTIR and NMR spectra shown in Figures S7 and S8). Figures S9a,b demonstrate that the introduction of disulfide bonds hinders the strong crystallization tendency of PUU elastomers, which is highly advantageous for their application as matrices in flexible electronic devices …”

“…According to the above, among the four SPU samples, although the self-healing efficiency of SPU-4 is the lowest, the mechanical properties (fracture tensile strength of 19.5 MPa and elongation at break of 744%) of the healed sample is the best after heat treatment at 120 C, which is also standout compared to self-healing polyureas reported previously (Figure 8h). 11,16,20,[35][36][37][38][39][40]…”
