A search for solar axion induced signals with COSINE-100

Abstract: We present results from a search for solar axions with the COSINE-100 experiment. We find no evidence of solar axion events from a data-set of 6,303.9 kg·days exposure and set a 90 % confidence level upper limit on the axionelectron coupling, g ae , of 1.70 × 10 −11 for an axion mass less than 1 keV/c 2 . This limit excludes QCD axions heavier than 0.59 eV/c 2 in the DFSZ model and 168.1 eV/c 2 in the KSVZ model.

“…From the analysis of the first 59.5 days of data collected, COSINE-100 excluded the DAMA/LIBRA signal as due to the SI interaction of WIMPs in a standard halo model [65]; these data have been also interpreted in other contexts like Inelastic Boosted DM [66] and WIMP effective models [67]. Results for solar axions have also been derived [68]. A first analysis of annual modulation from 1.7 years of data has been presented [69]; since three crystals were excluded (because of a reduced light yield), the total exposure analyzed is 97.79 kg•y.…”

“…𝑔 𝑎𝑒 𝑔 𝑎𝛾 for Primakoff axions or 𝑔 𝑎𝑒 𝑔 𝑎𝑁 for axions produced in a nuclear transition. A number of searches of this kind have been performed in recent years, see for example EDELWEISS-II [144], XMASS [153], XENON100 [145], PANDA-X [154], LUX [155], CDEX [156], and COSINE-100 [157]. Very recently the XENON1T collaboration has reported an excess of events in the electronic recoil spectrum below 7 keV [158].…”

“…The COSINE-100 experiment's aim is to confirm or refute the annual modulation signal observed by the DAMA/LIBRA experiment with an array of 106 kg of low-background NaI(Tl) crystals at the Yangyang underground laboratory (Y2L) in South Korea [36,37]. Physics data have been collected since September 2016, and used to produce a series of first results and bounds on various dark matter models [38][39][40][41]. The first measurement of an annual event rate modulation was reported in 2019 [39] even though its sensitivity was not sufficient to probe the DAMA/LIBRA signal.…”
