A sensitive liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry method for the determination of natural and synthetic steroid estrogens in seawater and marine biota, with a focus on proposed Water Framework Directive Environmental Quality Standards

Abstract: The proposed method is suitable for the detection of E1, E2 and EE2 at biologically relevant concentrations and, due to the specificity offered, is not subject to potential interferences from endogenous E1 and E2 which often complicate the interpretation of estrogenic biomarker assays.

“…LODs obtained by the proposed method were compared with that obtained by other approaches and the results were listed in Table . As can be seen, the LODs of 23 EDCs obtained by the proposed method were lower by about 1–4 orders of magnitude than those obtained by conventional GC/MS/MS methods and LC/MS/MS, and comparable with some works in which mass spectrometry was applied as the detector.…”

“…Analysis of EDCs is not an easy task because their high activity forces their determination at a very low level and it is difficult to isolate simultaneously many isomers with similar physical properties such as volatility or polarity. Various analytical methods have been developed for measuring EDCs in diverse matrices using gas chromatography (GC), liquid chromatography (LC) and capillary electrophoresis (CE) coupled with various detection methods, such as ultraviolet (UV) detection, fluorescence (FLD), electrochemical detection (ECD), and mass spectrometry (MS) . These methods have their own shortcomings, for example, low sensitivity and selectivity for UV, interferences after derivatization for FLD, bad repeatability for ECD due to electrode degradation, and the difficulty of simultaneously separating EDCs that have similar electrophoretic behavior for ECD.…”

“…The current classification method commonly used decision tree, neural network, KNN, SVM and the Bayesian methods, KNN algorithm in classification accuracy is simple and high in the Chinese automatic text classification has been applied widely. However, this method is more efficient to reduce the efficiency of the training samples with the large amount of computation, and the result is not very good [5].…”

“…It was found that terrestrial wastewater was one of important pollution sources to marine steroid pollution (Atkinson et al, 2003). Estrogens have been detected in marine water and sediment with concentrations ranging from ND to 0.76 ng/L (Ronan and McHugh, 2013) and ND to 3.60 ng/g, respectively (Braga et al, 2005;Isobe et al, 2006). In Europe, a list of priority pollutants with endocrine-disrupting properties defined by the Water Framework Directive (WFD, 2000), have been required for the substantial monitoring in transitional and coastal waters.…”
