A serologic investigation of blue tongue virus (BTV) in cattle, sheep and gazella subgutturosa subgutturosa in southeastern turkey

Abstract: Bluetongue virus (BTV) is a vector-borne disease of ruminants disseminated in the tropic and sub-tropic zone of the world. It is also an important problem in the Middle East. Three serotypes (4-9-16) of the virus have been isolated so far in Turkey. Gazella subgutturosa subgutturosa (Goitred Gazella) is native species of Anatolia. Due to risk of extinction, captured Gazelles have been taken under protection in a restricted area at Ceylanpinar state farm. In this study, the presence of Bluetongue virus (BTV) wa… Show more

“…The values found were similar to the reported in other European countries (Gür 2008;Linden et al 2008 Our results showed that red deer, Spanish ibex, fallow deer and mouflon were serologically positive to BTV. The high seroprevalences found suggest that these species are very susceptible to BTV infection.…”

“…The circulation of BTV has been previously described in a wide range of wild ruminant species in many countries from different continents, including North America (Hoff and Trainer 1978;Aguirre et al 1995;Stallknecht and Howerth 2004;Johnson et al 2006), South America (Rivera et al 1987;Bender et al 2003), Africa (Formenty et al 1994), Asia (Frölich et al 2005) and Europe (De Curtis et al 2006;Henrich et al 2007;Gür 2008;Linden et al 2008). …”

“…Previous epidemiological surveys showed high prevalence rates for BTV seropositivity in Iran (93.5%) and Southern Turkey (88%) [37,38]. In Sudan, earlier serological surveys indicated that BT infection is generally widespread and occurs in all domestic ruminants, with as high as 61.5% prevalence rate in Juba, South Sudan [18].…”

“…Burgu et al (1992) have reported 52.6% seropositivity in 890 cattle from 9 provinces in the Southeast Anatolia with prevalence ranging from 22.4% to 75.2%. The highest prevalence of 88% was determined in cattle in Southeast Anatolia (Gür 2008).…”
