A Simple Flow-injection Spectrofluorimetric Method for the Determination of Mercury

Abstract: A highly sensitive flow-injection spectrofluorimetric method is presented for the rapid and simple determination of Hg (II) in environmental and pharmaceutical samples. Murexide (ammonium purpurate) was used as the fluorescence reagent in the carrier stream. An emission peak of murexide, which is decreased linearly by addition of Hg (II), occurs at 435 nm in aqueous solution with excitation at 335 nm. A linear calibration was obtained for 5-200 ng ml(-1) Hg (II) with the relative standard deviation 2.5% (n = 5… Show more

“…Murexide is a metal chelator that has been employed as an indicator for the complexometric titration of metal [31] and as a chromogenic reagent for the determination of some metals. [32][33] Murexide can thus form complexes with metal cation contaminants in the HPLC system (e. g., from stainless steel capillary tubing, from column packing material) causing peak broadening (see chromatogram in Figure S2(b) in Supporting Information A).…”

“…After cooling down to room temperature, the mixture was filtered off and washed with dry acetone and the combined solution was dried over MgSO 4 . Removal of the solvent gave a yellow solid which was recrystallized from methanol to give a pale yellow crystal of (2) 25,26-dioxo-6,7,9,10,15,16,18,19- [1,4,13,16,7,10]tetraoxadithiacyclohesicosine-12,13-dicarbonitrile (4) A mixture of (2) (1.9 g, 3 mmol) and cis-1,2-dicyano-1,2-ethylene dithiolate disodium salt (3) (0.56 g, 3 mmol) in dry acetonitrile (300 mL) was evacuated and refilled several times with argon connected to a vacuum line. The reaction mixture was refluxed and stirred continuously under argon atmosphere for 8 days.…”

“…There are several methods of determining trace levels of mercury and copper in a variety of samples, which include atomic absorption spectrometry, spectrofluorimetry, voltametry, chromatographic methods and neutron activation analysis [12][13][14][15]. However, spectrophotometric methods are both easier and cheaper than these methods [16][17][18].…”
