A Simple Techno-Economic Assessment for Scaling-Up the Enzymatic Hydrolysis of MSW Pulp

Abstract: A techno-economic assessment (TEA) of enzymatic hydrolyses of a municipal solid waste (MSW)-derived pulp was performed to compare various bioprocessing configurations for the production of platform sugars at both pilot and demonstration scales (two-stage continuous, batch, and two-stage fed-batch). The configurations modeled used either rotary drum and/or continuous stirred tank reactors. By using reaction kinetics and public vendor’s quotes, economic analyses were calculated for each of the proposed systems: … Show more

“…TEA includes sensitivity analysis to assess the impact of uncertain parameters and variables on the economic performance of glucose production. This analysis explores how changes in factors such as raw material prices, energy costs, labor rates, and market conditions affect the profitability and overall economic feasibility of the process (Barba et al, 2022). Sensitivity analysis helps identify critical factors and assess the robustness of the project's financial performance under different scenarios.…”

“…It considers factors such as market volatility, regulatory changes, technological risks, and project-specific risks. By identifying and assessing these risks, TEA assists in developing risk management strategies and evaluating the project's resilience against potential challenges (Barba et al, 2022;Muhammad et al, 2022). The primary goal of TEA is to provide decision-makers with comprehensive information and insights to support informed decision-making (Brandt et al, 2018).…”

“…However, the main economic aspect of the enzymatic treatment of pollutants is the cost of the enzyme [103]. A recent study evaluated the costs of applying enzymes for hydrolyses of a municipal solid waste-derived pulp and described enzyme costs in the range of GBP 1-4/Kg [104]. Another study evaluated the techno-economic analysis of the production of enzymes such as Laccase from pumpkin peels as a substrate [105].…”

“…Enzymatic hydrolysis does not leave residual toxic chemicals; therefore, it is preferred in food processing [4]. A potential drawback is the high cost of enzymes [18]. Nevertheless, enzymatic hydrolysis is a reasonable alternative for recovering proteins and creating products with potential applications in various areas [2].…”
