A simple UV-photolysis digestion method for the determination of fluoride in fluorine-containing drugs by ion-selective electrode and spectrophotometry techniques

Abstract: A simple, effective and reliable UV photolysis digestion (UVPD) method has been developed for the determination of fluoride in pharmaceuticals containing fluorine as one of the constituents. It is based on the use of high intensity UV-irradiation in the presence of a mixture of HNO 3 and methanol. For the optimization of the UVPD procedure, three bulk drug samples namely levofloxacin, nebivolol and efavirenz, were chosen as representatives of three diverse matrices: containing single fluorine, two fluorine ato… Show more

“…Despite the relatively widespread use of spectrophotometry for fluorine determination in pharmaceutical and health care products [35,44], few applications of these methods could be found for biological samples (Table 2). For this kind of matrix, procedures for fluorine determination are relatively simple and based on low-cost instrumentation.…”

“…The difficulties of ISE include electrode drift, time consumption for equilibration and dissolution of the lanthanum fluoride membrane crystal 6 . Most traditional spectroscopic techniques, which study interactions between matter and radiated energy 7 , have similar detection ranges down to the microgram level ( Additional file 1 : Supplementary Table 1 ).…”
