A Simple WDM-PON Architecture Together With Private Interconnected ONUs

Abstract: In this paper, we present and investigate a wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) with symmetry 28 Gbit/s on-off keying (OOK) access signals and 3 Gbit/s virtual private network (VPN) link between the optical network units (ONUs) simultaneously. To achieve the VPN connection, a ring-based network architecture is designed to link every ONUs. Here, a direct modulation laser diode (LD) of 1311.6 nm wavelength is applied in ONU for VPN transmission to separate from PON network. In the … Show more

“…In particular, high-capacity data transmission ensures long-distance communication, extended coverage, and excellent flexibility. “…Recently, with the increase in the access data traffic numerously owing to the speedy progress of cloud service, quantum computing, artificial intelligence (AI), data center, big data, 4K/8K video, online game, and 3D holographic application, the network service providers need to provide the wide network capacity, low latency, high-speed rate, and cost-effective deployment for end user [1][2][3]. Thus, the passive optical network (PON) would be the best candidate for the last mile data traffic access [4,5]. Here, the timedivision-multiplexing (TDM) and wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) access are currently the most used technologies.…”

“…However, the modulation of the n WDM channels in the transmitter requires to use WDM filters [15], [16] or arrayed waveguide gratings (AWGs) [17] to select between the wavelengths. Thus, n optical branches are established.…”
