A simplified energy consumption model for fiber-based Next Generation Access Networks

Abstract: ICTs account nowadays for 2% of total carbón emissions. However, in a time when strict measures to reduce energy consumption in all the industrial and services sectors are required, the ICT sector faces an increase in services and bandwidth demand. The deployment of Next Generation Networks (NGN) will be the answer to this new demand and specifically, the Next Generation Access Networks (NGANs) will provide higher bandwidth access to users. Several policy and cost analysis are being carried out to understand t… Show more

“…1 and 2 derive from deployment models used in previous studies to assess the costs in the rollout process of NGA networks (Coomonte et al, 2012;Feijóo, Gómez-Barroso, & Ramos, 2011). The FTTH architecture is congruent with technical models of fixed fibre-based access networks (Kramer et al, 2012) and main fibre cost-related studies (Analysys Mason, 2008Mason, , 2009.…”

“…The introduction of optical access network technology is highly promising as it is the most energy efficient access network technology that is capable of providing high capacity broadband access network at low bit error rate (BER) [2], [3]. However, data reveals a large expenditure of energy at optical access network due to the large presence of optical network units (ONUs) which account for approximately 60-80% energy consumed by the optical access [4]- [6] and this energy consumption is mainly due to the network usage [7].…”
