A Comprehensive Review on Space Vector Modulation Techniques for Neutral Point Clamped Multi-Level Inverters

The Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) Multi-Level Inverters (MLI) have been ruling the power electronics industries for the past two decades. The Multi-Carrier Pulse Width Modulation (MCPWM) is common PWM techniques which are widely used in NPC-MLI applications. However, MCPWM is not having a good impact on the balancing of DC-link voltages, Common Mode Voltage (CMV) and limiting the Total Harmonics Distortion (THD). The Selective Harmonic Elimination (SHE) technique is introduced for reducing the THD, however all the switching angles should be maintained less than π/2 to keep the eliminated harmonics at constant level which narrows down the modulation index range. Hence, in recent days Space Vector Modulation (SVM) technique is widely used in NPC-MLI, which gives better DC-link voltage balancing, self-neutral point balancing, near-zero CMV reduction, better-quality harmonics profile and switching loss minimization. Hence, it is a preferred solution for the majority of electrical conversion applications such as electric traction, high power industrial drives, renewable power generation, and gridconnected inverters, etc. The paper gives a comprehensive review of the SVM for NPC-MLI. First, this paper deliberates the state of art for two-level SVM and extends it to three-level (3L) SVM. Also compares the 3L SVM performance with other MCPWM techniques. Followed by the various modified MLI SVM techniques in terms of their implementations, DC-link capacitor balancing, and reduction of CMV. Further, the review of MLI SVM is widened to open-end winding Inverters and multiphase MLIs. The final part of this paper discussed the future trends and research directions on MLI SVM techniques and its applications.

This work introduces a novel dual-sliding mode control approach for nineswitch inverter topology. The nine-switch inverter helps regulate multiple acloads by using fewer semiconductor devices than the conventional two parallel voltage source inverter system. However, achieving independent control of two sets of ac loads is not a straightforward task when a nine-switch inverter feeds separate load stages. Regarding this consideration, a dual-sliding mode controller that includes a specific decision-making algorithm can be an efficient solution for a multi-load control problem. The proposed strategy offers a good compensation performance for the unconnected load stage under different load utilization profiles. The designed closed-loop system has a rapid response to sudden load change, and no unwanted interaction between individual load stages is observed. The detailed design steps and performance analyses are reported. Experimental results demonstrate the capability and usefulness of the proposed control strategy.

This paper proposes a rotation carrier-based discontinuous pulse width modulation (CB-DPWM) method for the five-leg inverter (FLI). The FLI based on two-level topology consists of 10 switching devices for driving dual motors. Therefore, two switching devices can be reduced to compare the configuration using two three-leg inverters for driving dual motors. The proposed pulse width modulation (PWM) method is based on the reference signals which are used in existing carrier-based continuous pulse width modulation (CB-CPWM) method for FLI. In the proposed rotation CB-DPWM method, one of fiveleg is periodically clamped to Vdc/2 or-Vdc/2 by adding the offset voltage to the reference voltages of the existing CB-CPWM method. The five reference voltages for all legs are considered to calculate the offset voltage of the proposed rotation CB-DPWM method. Consequently, since the proposed rotation CB-DPWM method has the fewer number of switching than that of the existing CB-CPWM, the switching loss can be reduced and it results in the efficiency improvement. Simulation and experimental results confirm the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method.
