A SIP-based method for intra-domain handoffs

Abstract: The mobility management issue in IP access networks can be dealt with from various perspectives. A possible approach includes the use of the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and its associate entities for mobility signaling. Following this approach, existing SIP functionality in a network can be reused for mobility management purposes, providing efficient utilization of resources. In this paper we propose the Hierarchical Mobile SIP (HMSIP) framework, a SIP-based intra-domain mobility management approach that… Show more

“…This has the benefit of reducing delay and packet loss during handoff and eliminating location updates between mobile nodes and their registrar. As a result, HSIP can reduce the signaling overhead and support seamless handoff [9,10]. Additionally, paging can be supported in HSIP.…”

“…In any event, both of the previous approaches are unsuitable for real time applications. In [17], Hierarchical Mobile SIP (HMSIP) is introduced for micro-mobility of MN. A new component called HMSIP agent is installed as a local registrar in every domain, and every mobile node registers with a HMSIP agent.…”
