A sociotechnical system approach to virtual citizen science: an application of BS ISO 27500:2016

Abstract: We discuss the potential application to virtual citizen science of a recent standard (BS ISO 27500:2016 “The human-centred organisation”) which encourages the adoption of a sociotechnical systems perspective across a wide range of businesses, organizations and ventures. Key tenets of the standard concern taking a total systems approach, capitalizing on individual differences as a strength, making usability and accessibility strategic objectives, valuing personnel and paying attention to ethical and values-led … Show more

“…However, these choices are not neutral but influence how users make use of the portals and their understanding of citizen science. For example, the design of a citizen science project guides citizen scientists into certain types of data collection [Brown and Williams, 2018;Houghton et al, 2019]. Within digital media studies it is widely studied how design choices guide users into certain actions.…”

“…In the literature, there are many descriptive studies primarily concerned with providing conceptualizations of social and technical aspects of crowdsourcing (e.g., [29]). Nevertheless, it has been argued that there is a lack of practical frameworks to distinguish crowd science "as a designable system whose boundaries encompass social, scientific and technical elements that are interconnected" [41]. A description of the main dimensions of our classification scheme for crowd-AI supported research is given in the ensuing sections.…”

“…In their paper, Robert Houghton and co-authors [Houghton et al, 2019] make reference to BS ISO 27500:2016 "The human-centred organisation" standard, which highlights the importance of socio-technical infrastructures and context to support the design of a citizen science project. This paper is therefore a step towards demonstrating the importance of human-centred design practices towards a technical audience.…”
