A Soft‐Path Solution to Risk Reduction by Modeling Medical Waste Disposal Center Location‐Allocation Optimization

Abstract: The risk of medical waste pollution and huge demand of daily medical waste disposal pose great difficulties to medical waste management. Establishing medical waste disposal centers (MWDCs) is considered one of the ways to reduce the environmental and public risk of medical waste pollution. However, how to serve the medical waste disposal demand in optimal MWDCs' locations is a key challenge due to the complexity of the whole system and relationships among stakeholders. This article develops a soft-path solutio… Show more

“…The optimization of the collection and disposal model network aiming to minimize transportation is proposed by Homayouni and Pishvaee (2020) as essential for controlling health risks and waste management costs. Yao et al (2020) and Gao et al (2021) also pointed out the establishment of proper HCW center to minimize pollution, negative environment problems and also health risks.…”

“…Embedding the decision of pharmacological waste collection into a medical goods distribution problem, Osaba et al (2019) modeled a multi-attribute vehicle routing problem with pickups and deliveries. Yao et al (2020) developed a risk mitigation-oriented bi-level equilibrium optimization model for a soft-path solution in locating medical waste disposal centers. Kargar et al (2020) designed a multi-item and multi-period model for a medical waste reverse supply chain, where both sustainability and environmental criteria are considered.…”

“…According to Yao et al [183], the solution to the complex relationships among stakeholders is to find the optimal locations of the MW disposal centers. They reduced risks and mitigated costs by optimizing the MW disposal centers location-allocation problem using a soft-path solution, i.e., a risk mitigation-oriented bilevel equilibrium optimization model employing the Stackelberg game behavior as regards local government and healthcare facilities.…”
