A software defined hierarchical communication and data management architecture for industry 4.0

Abstract: The Industry 4.0 paradigm alludes to a new industrial revolution where factories evolve towards digitalized and networked structures where intelligence is spread among the different elements of the production systems. Two key technological enablers to achieve the flexibility and efficiency sought for factories of the future are the communication networks and the data management schemes that will support connectivity and data distribution in Cyber-Physical Production Systems. Communications and data management … Show more

“…Computer and telecommunication networks are today involved in all main worldwide applications as telephony, financial transactions, banking, TV, on-demand entertainment services, Internet of Things, to cite a few [1] - [3]. In addition, the fourth industrial revolution, also known as Industry 4.0, pushes for bonding communication networks with the industrial ones with the general aims of improving the performance, the level of automation, the level of efficiency and quality of process and final products [4].…”

“…The Internet of Things (IoT) has brought significant benefits to several application scenarios, such as smart cities [1,2] and smart homes [3][4][5], smart metering [6], robotics [7,8], healthcare [9][10][11], and energy management systems [12]. Moreover, the introduction of IoT in industrial environments, i.e., the so-called Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) [13][14][15], plays a key role in the Industry 4.0 context where a large number of different kinds of devices cooperate over a heterogeneous communication network [16,17]. The steady increase of both network complexity and sharing of physical resources in Industry 4.0 scenarios raises the need for flexible and efficient resource management solutions.…”
