A Spatial Analysis of the Potentials for Offshore Wind Farm Locations in the North Sea Region: Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract: Over the last decade, the accelerated transition towards cleaner means of producing energy has been clearly prioritised by the European Union through large-scale planned deployment of wind farms in the North Sea. From a spatial planning perspective, this has not been a straight-forward process, due to substantial spatial conflicts with the traditional users of the sea, especially with fisheries and protected areas. In this article, we examine the availability of offshore space for wind farm deployment, from a … Show more

“…Also in the context of the North Sea, several initiatives based on the readaptation of oil and gas platforms in photovoltaic and wind energy systems have already been carried out. These initiatives are well accepted by the local population because the plants are positioned on offshore platforms which are located far away from the coast [94]. However, another interviewee, related to a prestigious Italian non-profit organization, pointed out that "Governance should apply a bottom-up decision-making process by being awareness about the difficulties of local companies and by helping concretely the individual actions to create sustainable and economic value and improve the social wellbeing.…”

“…An overview of the area required for the authorised OWFs (consent-authorised, authorised), those in the construction phases (pre-construction, under construction) or those in operation (fully commissioned) OWFs in the North Sea basin (Fig. 1) illustrates a continuous development in almost all of the studied countries, until 2048 (based on available data 22 ). The geo-spatial repository (Appendix E, Tables 4,5,6,7,8) we compiled provides information related to the OWFs for which the status of the start date of construction/operation is known (N-3.5 and N-3.6 OWFs in the German EEZ).…”

“…The area has enormous offshore wind potential and other renewable sources such as wave energy, ocean thermal energy conversion, carbon capture and storage, etc. [7,8]. It is also possible to strategically transform the region's existing grids and networks to accommodate future sustainable solutions [9].…”
