& Key message Trees outside forests (TOF) have crucial ecological and social-economic roles in rural and urban contexts around the world. We demonstrate that a large-scale estimation strategy, based on a two-phase inventory approach, effectively supports the assessment of TOF's diversity and related climate change mitigation potential. & Context Although trees outside forest (TOF) affect the ecological quality and contribute to increase the social and economic developments at various scales, lack of data and difficulties to harmonize the known information currently limit their integration into national and global forest inventories. & Aims This study aims to develop and test a large-scale estimation framework to assess ecological diversity and above-ground carbon stock of TOF. & Methods This study adopts a two-phase inventory approach. & Results In the surveyed territory (Molise region, Central Italy), all the attributes considered (tree abundance, basal area, wood volume, above-ground carbon stock) are concentrated in a few dominant species. Furthermore, carbon stock in TOF aboveground biomass is non-negligible (on average: 28.6 t ha −1). Compared with the low field sampling effort (0.08% out of 52,796 TOF elements), resulting uncertainty of the estimators are more than satisfactory, especially those regarding the diversity index estimators (relative standard errors < 10%). & Conclusion The proposed approach can be suitably applied on vast territories to support landscape planning and maximize ecosystem services balance from TOF.

Abstract:The present-day phytosanitary disasters caused by biological invasions are afflicting urban and peri-urban forest stands worldwide, as well as the varied services they normally provide. In Europe, we are witnessing an alarming situation due to an increasing introduction of infectious diseases and pests. The authors present an up-to-date list of alien microbial pathogens and insect pests affecting urban greening that have been accidentally imported in Italy or that are likely to be introduced. Information about the biology, epidemiology, ethology, and control of these invasive organisms is provided. For each species, the current geographical distribution, including newly-colonized areas, is also given, as well as the chronological progression of its occurrence. Particular detail is used for describing symptoms-the key diagnostic elements for appropriate and timely phytosanitary management. This paper will benefit urban forest management, which is a crucial factor in maintaining the social and ecological viability of urban green spaces, as well as ecosystem services. The importance of engaging citizens in community-based monitoring of urban greenspaces for tracking the location, abundance, and pathways of invasive pathogens and pests will also be touched upon.

By including ecosystems in process design, it becomes possible to develop synergies between technological and ecological systems to establish islands of environmental sustainability. Such an approach can also ensure that human activities do not degrade ecosystems-the very systems that are essential for our sustainability. This work evaluates the idea of including ecosystems as unit operations in process design [1] while accounting for the intermittency and growth of ecological systems.The technology of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and a forest ecosystem are both capable of mitigating nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) emissions and are designed to support a chloralkali process near Galveston, Texas. The cost of the forest ecosystem taking up NO 2 is found to be one-fourth of the cost of the SCR. However, as the capacity of vegetation to take up emissions varies with seasons, the chloralkali process needs to adjust its manufacturing rate accordingly. The result of such adaptation to local ecosystems can be manufacturing with net zero emissions and a step toward environmental sustainability. This study demonstrates the need for further research to address the practical and theoretical aspects of industry and ecosystems to establish mutually beneficial relationships that are economically, ecologically, and societally viable.
