A Stress Analysis of Pipe Flange Connections

Abstract: The use of pipe flange connections is standardized in the codes of JIS, ASME, DIN and so on. However, these codes are almost entirely dependent on experience, and subsequently some problems concerning pipe flange connections have been encountered. In the present paper, the distribution of contact stresses which governs the sealing performance is analyzed as a three-body contact problem, using an axisymmetrical three-dimensional theory of elasticity. The effects of the stiffness and the thickness of raised face… Show more

“…In designing bolted joints with gaskets, it is important to understand the interface stress distribution that governs the sealing performance. Some investigations have been carried out on the characteristics [1,2] and the design [3] of bolted joints such as the interface stress distribution and the sealing performance evaluation. Recently, however, it is required to improve the sealing performance since many mechanical structures are used under increasingly severe operative conditions.…”

“…The authors investigated the effect of hub taper and the number of bolts on the gasket contact stresses. Sawa et al [10] investigated the contact stresses analytically using an axisymmetric elasticity formulation and conducted experimental analysis of leakage.…”

“…Analytical models have been developed to capture the deformation response of a gasket (e.g. Sawa et al, 1991;Bouzid and Derenne, 2002). Sawa et al (1991) modelled a metallic gasket as an elastic body.…”

“…Sawa et al, 1991;Bouzid and Derenne, 2002). Sawa et al (1991) modelled a metallic gasket as an elastic body. However, this approach cannot be used for semimetallic gaskets since it does not account for the non-linear behaviour of such gaskets (Krishna et al, 2007).…”
