Auxetic materials, possessing a negative poisson's ratio, can be arranged in various geometric configurations, such as tubular structures. Unlike conventional materials, which contract in lateral dimensions when stretched longitudinally, auxetic tubular expands in response to applied forces. This review article amalgamates the latest experimental data and insights from preceding scholarly works, offering a detailed analysis of the structural design, fabrication processes, and mechanical characteristics of auxetic tubular structures. The review encompasses an analysis of their tensile properties, comparative evaluations with different materials, impact resistance, enhanced bending, and flexibility. Furthermore, the article explores the wide-ranging applications of auxetic tubular in diverse sectors such as automobile manufacturing, aerospace, medicine, and textiles. Additionally, investigated not only new suggestions and future considerations for the advancement of these materials and structures but also a rigorous examination of the forthcoming and new challenges. This multifaceted approach distinguishes it from prior studies within the same scientific domain.

The interest in novel mechanical metamaterials that offer advanced functionalities and mechanical tunability for highly compatible multifunctional performance in state‐of‐the‐art engineering applications is growing. Here, a novel tunable multifunctional mechanical metamaterial, also known as a metamaterial sandwich panel, which can achieve load‐bearing, energy absorption, and low‐frequency vibration isolation properties simultaneously, is reported. The designed metamaterial sandwich panel is composed of a quasi‐zero stiffness (QZS) lattice core and two kirigami‐style surfaces, which endow the metamaterial sandwich panel with multi‐function performance and tunable properties. As a proof‐of‐concept, the mechanical properties and tunable multifunctional performance of the proposed metamaterial sandwich panel are demonstrated both in simulations and experiments. This work provides a new alternative for designing novel mechanical metamaterials with tunable multifunctional performance and may have potential applications in a variety of engineering applications, such as medical transportation, marine systems, and aerospace applications.

Out‐of‐Plane Dynamics of a Novel Auxetic Honeycomb with an Anti‐Trichiral Hierarchy

This study extensively characterizes the out‐of‐plane stiffness and energy harvesting capabilities of a newly proposed anti‐trichiral hierarchical auxetic honeycomb structure, both mechanically and deformationally. By introducing a design concept based on the anti‐trichiral honeycomb (ATCH), a structure with superior out‐of‐plane load‐carrying capacity and excellent auxeticity is achieved. To validate the finite element model, compression simulations are conducted. Comparative investigations into the morphing characteristics and energy harvesting performance between the novel structure and the ATCH are performed. Additionally, the influence of various parameters on the comprehensive performance of the novel auxetic structure is explored. It has been found that the angle φ is most sensitive to the auxetic properties, while the ratio k significantly impacts energy absorption. This research advances the design of novel auxetic structures for potential applications in protective engineering.
