The new energy market is growing rapidly, lithium batteries (LBs) as the most important source of energy supply in the energy storage and power market, has higher requirements for fast charge and long life, so it is necessary to improve the cell voltage and energy density of LBs. However, LBs with high voltage and high energy density will face serious challenges of electrolyte decomposition and electrode corrosion in high voltage environment. Herein, this review summarizes the effects of a series of sultones as electrolyte additives in high voltage electrolytes. It is found that DTD, ES, 1,3‐PS, PES, PCS, MMDS, BDTD, BDTT, DTDph, ODTO, FPS, VES and other sultones have excellent properties on stabilizing SEI/CEI formation, inhibiting gas production, and good high temperature resistance. The preferential oxidation/reduction of sultones can protect the electrolyte from decomposition, and the uniform and dense SEI/CEI can also promote Li+ transport, protect the electrode from corrosion, prevent the growth of lithium dendrites, and promote the insertion and removal of Li+, so as to improve the cycle life of the high‐voltage battery. Therefore, sultones are very suitable as high‐voltage LBs electrolyte additives to improve the performance of cells. This review can provide theoretical support for the design of high voltage and high energy density LBs electrolyte and selection of additives in the future.

The performance of electrochemical batteries is intricately tied to the physicochemical environments established by their employed electrolytes. Traditional battery designs utilizing a single electrolyte often impose identical anodic and cathodic redox conditions, limiting the ability to optimize redox environments for both anode and cathode materials. Consequently, advancements in electrolyte technologies are pivotal for addressing these challenges and fostering the development of next‐generation high‐performance electrochemical batteries. This review categorizes perspectives on electrolyte technology into three key areas: additives engineering, comprehensive component analysis encompassing solvents and solutes, and the effects of concentration. By summarizing significant studies, the efficacy of electrolyte engineering is highlighted, and the review advocates for further exploration of optimized component combinations. This review primarily focuses on liquid electrolyte technologies, briefly touching upon solid‐state electrolytes due to the former greater vulnerability to electrode and electrolyte interfacial effects. The ultimate goal is to generate increased awareness within the battery community regarding the holistic improvement of battery components through optimized combinations.

Role of Anion Flexibility on Graphite Electrode Reactions in Bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide-Based Ionic Liquid Electrolytes for Lithium-Ion Batteries

We subjected bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide (FSA)-based ionic liquid (IL) electrolytes for lithium (Li)-ion batteries to structural and electrochemical studies to elucidate the criticality of "FSA-anion flexibility" on Li-ion solvation/desolvation and electrode-reaction properties in the batteries. Raman spectroscopy, high-energy X-ray total scattering, and theoretical calculations were used to comprehensively conduct the structural investigation to reveal the occurrence of specific Li-ion solvation in the LiFSA/IL solutions exhibiting low and extremely high LiFSA concentrations (c Li ). Li ions in the low-c Li solutions (<2.0 M) formed a mononuclear [Li(FSA) 3 ] 2− complex exhibiting monodentate-and bidentate-type coordination. The structure of this complex differed significantly from that formed in the high-c Li solutions (∼3.4 M in this case) and yielded ionic aggregates based on the FSA-linked ordered Li ions. Further, the calculation of the potential energy surface of the internal conformational change in FSA revealed its flexible conformation, which was changeable even when confined within Li−FSA complexes. This behavior differed significantly from that observed for the analogous anion (bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide), indicating the ease of changing the conformation of coordinated FSA from bidentate to monodentate, thus facilitating FSA desolvation from the Li-ion complexes via the weaker Liion interactions with monodentate FSA compared to its interactions with chelating-effect-exerting bidentate FSA. This feature was fully reflected in the reaction of the graphite negative electrode, where the favorable FSA desolvation in the low-c Li solutions contributed to lowering the activation energy (E a ) during charge transfer, thus resulting in kinetically improved Li + insertion into the graphite layers. Notably, the obtained E a value was 10 kJ mol −1 higher in the high-c Li solution (c Li = 3.4 M) than in the low-c Li solutions probably because of the highly ordered Li + structures, which exhibited higher structural-relaxation energy.
