A structural equation model of posttraumatic growth after prostate cancer

Abstract: Results support the notion that the appraisal of cancer, disruption of fundamental beliefs, and experience of intrusive cancer-related rumination are associated with PTG. Additionally, a sense of connection with peers and seeking an understanding of the cancer experience through peers is important for the perception of PTG. Possible indirect pathways were also proposed between resilience and PTG.

“…7,8 Finding benefit has potential to bolster positive intrapersonal and interpersonal coping resources, such as positive appraisals, emotion regulation skills, likelihood of goal attainment, and stronger interpersonal relationships. 3,5,9,10 Such resources likely modulate physiological stress responses, including hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis regulation. 10,11 Research on BF and HPA activity is limited, but there is some evidence to indicate that BF is related to better cortisol functioning in non-cancer populations.…”

“…Studies have examined the association of PTSS and PTG. Although they have found a positive association between PTSS and PTG (Arpawong, Oland, Milam, Ruccione, & Meeske, 2013;Wilson, Morris, & Chambers, 2014), the strength of the association was relatively modest, with one meta-analysis reporting a mean correlation of only .13 (Shand, Cowlishaw, Brooker, Burney, & Ricciardelli, 2015). Research has also shown that the association varies across studies as a function of trauma type, duration of follow-up, and patient age (Picoraro et al, 2014).…”

“…Deliberate rumination (i.e., seeking to construct a new assumptive world or core beliefs) has been suggested as a critical factor in predicting PTG (Calhoun & Tedeschi, ). Empirical studies with cancer survivors have mostly supported this model, showing that examining core beliefs, engaging in intrusive rumination, and deliberate rumination all contribute to PTG (Wilson et al., ).…”

“…PTG has been observed in a sample of not only cancer patients but also other people, such as those who experienced natural disaster (Nakagawa et al, 2014), husbands of breast cancer survivors (Weiss, 2004), the bereaved (Taku, Calhoun, Cann, & Tedeschi, 2008), parents of children with life-threatening disease (Forinder & Norberg, 2013), and people with HIV/AIDS (Milam, 2004). One study examining PTG among cancer survivors revealed that approximately 87% of them have experienced PTG at most; however, the prevalence rate varies depending on the characteristics of participants, such as age, gender, race, and the site or stage of cancer (Arpawong, Richeimer, Weinstein, Elghamrawy, & Milam, 2013;Brix et al, 2013;Crawford, Vallance, Holt, & Courneya, 2015;Danhauer et al, 2013;Kent et al, 2013;Lelorain, Bonnaud-Antignac, & Florin, 2010;Nenova, DuHamel, Zemon, Rini, & Redd, 2013;Wang et al, 2014;Wilson, Morris, & Chambers, 2014;Zebrack et al, 2014).…”
