A Study of Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Methods for Practical Visceral Fat Estimation

Abstract: The method of bioelectrical impedance-based visceral fat estimation is in advance of other methods such as X-ray CT or MRI from the point views of cost and safety. However, it requires complex and diversity signal analysis and modeling to realize its high estimation accuracy. In response to this requirement, complication of feature attributes and simplification in selection of them to model the estimation has been proposed and evaluated in this paper. The complication of feature attributes is realized by apply… Show more

“…The principles of IAFA determination by the dual BIA instrument were described previously. [13,14] Briefly, the dual BIA instrument consists of a bioelectric impedance component that measures truncal and surface impedance of the body, and a device that measures the physical size of the abdomen. The 2 sets of electrodes are for limb and truncal placement.…”

“…Other details of the study method were described previously. [6,7,13,14] Measurements were performed at the end of expiration phase in normal breathing because measurement is affected by breathing phase. To avoid the interference of hydration status on results, measurements were done at the fasting morning with minimum of drink.…”

“…b, insert). The impedance of the axial abdomen was used for calculating the lean body mass because most of the electrical current flows through the fat‐free tissues . Electric current between two abdominal electrodes is used to calculate the SFA because the electric current flows through the SFA.…”

“…Method 4 is devised by Taik-kyun Lim [13]. Method 5 is from M.Yoneda et al [11]. In each experiment, we changed frequency (25, 50, 100 KHz) and current (400, 600, 700 uA) to see how they affect the body impedance.…”
