A Study of blood soluble P-selectin, fibrinogen, and von Willebrand factor levels in idiopathic and lone atrial fibrillation

Abstract: Both platelet activation and abnormal changes in coagulation were suggested in idiopathic AF and a platelet activation state in lone AF. This supports the notion that AF per se contributes to a state of hypercoagulation.

“…Others have reported conflicting results of VWF levels in AF patients compared with NSR controls. [12][13][14][15][16] These findings may reflect differences in accrual rates of AF patients with SEC which was not accounted for in those studies. [12][13][14][15][16] Furthermore, VWF:Ag and VWF:Act are independent predictors for LAAT after adjustment for CHADS 2 score …”

“…AF also produces a hypercoagulable state [4446]. This is above all a consequence of abnormal blood flow in the left atrium but abnormal changes in blood constituents are also described [45, 46].…”

“…This also translates into altered levels of blood coagulation markers like P-selectin and fibrinogen [25]. The two risk scores most widely used to assess the severity of thrombotic changes and the risk of thrombosis in AF patients are CHADS 2 and CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc scores [13,14].…”
